Lab experiments:

During our time in the lab, we conducted several experiments that measured the rates of transpiration and looked at stomata of different tree species.

Stomata are the openings in leaf surfaces where gas exchange takes place. We were able to look at leaf stomata in this very simple lab

Required materials:

  • Green leaf
  • Clear nail polish
  • Clear tape
  • Slide
  • Microscope

Procedure:

  • Polish a small portion of the underside of the leaf and let dry (about 10 minutes).
  • After the polish is dry, place a small piece of tape over it and then remove it.
  • Place the tape on the slide.
  • Place slide on stage of microscope and observe the stomata!
