Dissolved Oxygen: The hot treatments showed a slight increase in DO2. This increase in DO2 was greatest in the hot/CO2 treatment.
Results of pH Value: The pH value of the cold temperature treatments, as measured in the water, was lower than the higher temperature treatments. The hot/air treatment had the highest final pH value.
Leaf Growth: Corn plants in the cold/CO2 treatment showed the greatest increase in average leaf growth. Cold/air treatment resulted in the greatest average leaf growth in barley. However, these results were unexpected because corn did better in cold treatments. The higher temperature should have resulted in greater growth of the corn and higher CO2 should have resulted in greater barley growth. (Standard Deviation: Barley + 0.98 cm/day ; Corn + 1.63 cm/day.)
Limitations: The air flow was not standardized in each treatment because two different pumps were used. Since there was only one thermometer placed in one aquarium, temperatures of the other three treatments were not measured. Temperature differences of at least 10 – 15 ° C needed to be maintained, in order to have significant results. These factors influenced our results.Click here to return to C3/C4 home page |
