Sharonoa S. Moss

Biographical Information

I was born in Dothan, Alabama. I graduated in 1990 from Northview High School. I attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, AL, where I received my B.S. in science.

I have been teaching for (4) years.  I teach Biology (10th grade). I always tell people that I believe teaching is a gift from God. My major in college was Biology/Pre-Nursing.  I went through one year of Nursing school at the University of Alabama and decided that nursing was not for me.  Teaching to me is very rewarding. It makes me feel so happy when my students grasp a concept or even when they come back after they have left my class and tell me that I have inspired them.  I try to relate to my students and also get to know them outside of the classroom.  This makes them fell as though you care about them.

My favorite pastimes are reading, spending time with my family, and surfing the Internet.  I like to travel and spend time visiting friends, also.

Biographical Information

My interest in science heightened during my freshman year of high school in Mr. Bells’ class.  Mr. Bell enabled us to perform fun, cool labs and ignited our flames of curiosity.  My excitement for science continued and I graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with a degree in the Biological Sciences. Working as a lab assistant in Cancer research, I further developed my skills in scientific research.  During this experience I had the opportunity to mentor a high school student in designing and performing experiments. It was then I decided to follow in Mr. Bells’ footsteps. I wanted to excite students about the beauty and intricacies of science.

I left Pittsburgh, went west and landed in the Master’s program for Educators at Northern Illinois University.

I currently educate freshman and sophomores at Jefferson High School in Rockford, Illinois in Biology and upperclassmen in AP Biology. I greatly enjoy collaborating with my awesome science colleagues on developing best biology teaching methods and determining best brews of the Midwest (and beyond).

My current hobbies include playing soccer, gardening, reading, and home destruction and repair. A few of my favorite things are books, music, books, fine dark brews, and sharing laughs with my friends.

My fondest biology memory is when I found a blue Caecilian in the mud during a field research study in Ecuador and earned the Herpetologist of the Day Award.

Although I’ve been living in Manhattan for 18 years and love it, I have a deep longing to move back to Oregon some day where I was born and raised. It’s easy to miss the mountains, deserts, beaches and relaxed life style of the West Coast.  My father was a biology teacher with summers off so we spent July and August camping in remote Oregon woods.

I teach the Living Environment to 10th graders in a small public high school in Manhattan called East Side Community High School. We are part of New Visions and the Coalition of Essential Schools, two organizations striving to develop schools and teachers which incorporate team teaching, cooperative learning, portfolio assessments, student-centered, hands-on and inquiry-based learning.  I am fortunate to be a part of a wonderful staff of mostly young, relatively new teachers dedicated to teaching this way. However, it takes continuous effort to develop curriculum incorporating these principles of teaching.

Before teaching I was a dancer in a woman’s modern dance collective for 10 years. Dance exercise and hiking are a big part of my life. I also worked as a graphic artist for 6 years, drove a school bus, waitressed in numerous restaurants, worked in fish and vegetable canaries, cleaned houses, etc.

This fall I moved to Montclair, NJ.  It’s a long commute to my job in NYC but nice to be in a quiet little town listening to birds and jogging in the woods.

I have been teaching for 25 years and have multiple certifications.  I began my career teaching k-5 Health and Physical Education.  Some schools were 4 room old buildings, which made a young teacher become creative. I then taught 5th and 6th grade Social Studies and Science. Since then I’ve spent the last 23 years teaching High School Science until this semester when I return to my origins with one junior class of Health and Physical Education. I am Science Department Chair person, G&T mentor, Assistant Athletic Director in addition to coaching Girls Cross Country and Winter Track.  I also officiate High School Field Hockey and Lacrosse.  All this keeps me pretty busy but I am outside as much as I can, running, biking, kayaking, or cross-country skiing depending on the weather.

My first three years of teaching have flown by!  It’s the best gig I’ve had so far. Nothing beats the freedom to revel in one’s favorite topics and I’ve been lucky enough to be granted a lot of autonomy.  I teach 9th grade Biology and the students are remarkably bright, energetic, and demanding. We feed off each other’s enthusiasm.  In the back of my mind I think of the biology teacher I had in high school and I strive to make her proud.

Outside the classroom I keep as busy as possible.  I dance and play soccer regularly. Whenever possible I try to get out into the wilderness with my backpack. I grew up in a family always on the go and not much has changed. I’m a dabbler and I hope it staves off boredom and burnout.

I have been teaching for 18 years. My first 8 years in the classroom were spent teaching Chemistry at my Alma Mater, Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Ohio.  I enjoyed the opportunity to teach with a number of faculties, both lay and religious, who were instrumental in my decision to pursue education as a profession. I feel very passionately that there is no calling in life greater than that of sharing one’s wonder, excitement and interest in the natural world with others.  Ten years ago, I switched gears and moved from teaching chemistry to teaching biology in a 2year integrated science program developed by teachers in the Worthington (OH) schools Biological and Earth Systems Science (BESS).  The emphasis in this program is to help students see the natural interconnections that exist among the disciplines of science and to advance scientific literary. I have enjoyed my tenure here in Worthington and am looking forward to expanding my horizons as we enter the 21st century and truly begin to teach in the genome age.
