Biographical Information

I was born and raised in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, but today I live in the heart of the Midwest, just outside of Chicago. As much as I love the “Windy City”, there’s still plenty of “small town country boy” in me. Maybe that’s why I feel so at home teaching biology. I love to share what I enjoy about nature and the many wonders of the world around us.

I’m just finishing my second year of teaching at an urban/suburban high school—Larkin High School in Elgin, Illinois.  My students really keep me on my toes!

In addition to my teaching duties, I am the athletic trainer for our school.  It makes for some very long days, but leads to a lot of rich memories and relationships with my students.

Whenever possible, and especially in the summer, I love to put on scuba gear and go for a dive!  Tropical diving is by far my favorite, especially those easy drift dives of Cozumel!!
But, I’m always up for a wreck dive in the Great Lakes.  I try, whenever possible, to connect my passions for scuba diving to my classroom and biology for the perfect medium.

I’m really looking forward to meeting my fellow participants at this summer’s Institute.  I do my best to impress on my students that genetics are the future frontier of biology and they are in for some great changes in their lifetime. I look forward to learning from and sharing with all of you.

Biographical Information

I started teaching in 1989, after getting tired of free-lancing for engineering companies doing Marine Field Investigations. Only waitressing supported me between jobs, so I went for job stability, regular paychecks, plus Health insurance.

Being from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands were a regular playground.  My Master’s degree is in Marine Sciences and I love the ocean! Having been a Fisheries Biologist for the Virgin Islands Fish and Wildlife Division for five years, I decided to travel and see the world. After sojourns in Australia, New York City, and Florida, I finally returned to my home, the Virgin Islands.

My new school is wonderful after doing time at the other high school.  I teach Marine Biology and AP Biology and my most fulfilling achievements are to teach my students to snorkel, go underwater to love and appreciate Mother Ocean.

Kevin M. Bryan

Biographical Information

First and foremost, I am a military brat, Air Force to be accurate.  I have lived in 9 different states, several more than once, born in a different state and have lived in 1 foreign country. I was born in Maine, while my dad was stationed in New Hampshire and I am looking forward to visiting this area after the institute, as I have no memory of the area.  I graduated from Zweibruecken American High School, Zweibruecken, Germany.

I am married and have 3 kids (two boys and a girl).  My primary interest with my family is scouting. I am involved with both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts.  I camp just about every month, some months more than once.  Last year, I was able to attend the National Boy Scout Jamboree with my oldest son and am looking forward to the 2005 Jamboree with my second son.

Teaching is my second career.  I spent 11 years in a lab doing research.  I was a Cell Biologist for 15 months working on treatments for Leukemia. In addition, I helped diagnose AIDS cases in a process of elimination that took two weeks; this was before the first AIDS test.  From there I became a Protein Chemist, where I worked on artificial sweeteners, bone growth factors, treatments for septic shook, cancer treatments and much more.  I worked on protein purification, characterization and stability.  I have also spent some time working on scaling bench top procedures to large scale manufacturing processes. My last research job was with a small company in West Los Angeles, where I was working with two physicians conducting stage 1 clinical trials, writing drug protocols for our product test in England, writing the Standard Operating Procedures for all aspects of the drug and finally dealing with our manufacturer in Florida.  When I was laid off for the second time I decided to go into teaching.

I am in my 8th year of teaching and love it. I will never go back to research.  I spent three years teaching in South-Central Los Angeles before I got “smart” and moved up to High School.  I currently teach in East Los Angeles. I have taught all three-grade levels at Middle School and three levels of Integrated Science at the High School. My favorite class is APES (AP Environmental Science).  I was trained in Biochemistry and spent years doing research at a molecular level, now I have learned a lot about our environment from teaching this class.  It has truly been a great experience.

One of my best memories is taking 9 students with another teacher and driving to Yellowstone and back for 1 week.  We went in April when much of the park was closed, but the experience that the students and I had was great.  For many of the kids, it was their first trip outside of California and Nevada. Many saw their first snow and it was their first snowball fight for all of them.  It was my third trip to Yellowstone, but the first in the winter months.  It was a great trip.

Biographical Information

I have been teaching for 20 years. Having grown up with two grandfathers, both of whom were educators, I always thought I would teach at the end of my working career. After the Peace Corps (Jamaica) and 4 years as a Juvenile Probation Counselor in Virginia and 2 years as the Director of a Non-profit Youth Employment Organizations, I decided to try teaching. I married, had two beautiful children, divorced twelve years later and am now a single father of three with one grown stepchild. I coach squash and teach and play squash and golf for recreation. I also enjoy white water canoeing, tennis and biking. I taught Biology and AP Biology at Episcopal High School for 13 years before moving to Blair Academy 6 years ago to be close to my children.  I enjoy most the process of researching, planning and conducting learning activities and am interested in learning theory as it applies to teaching.  I have spent 19 years teaching and coaching at boarding schools.  I believe in the value of small classes, strong community (school) interactions and educating the whole person.  I dislike the sense of entitlement that some of my students have and am frustrated when the administration makes exceptions for “development” cases. As a professional educator, I at times feel isolated in my classroom and in need of communications with others who care about the quality of what goes on in their classrooms.

Saundra L. Coffey

Biographical Information

Wow! I am so excited to be able to participate in the 2002 Biology Institute. I have been teaching for 19 years. Choosing what I most enjoy teaching in terms of subject matter and grade is difficult. Since I have been fortunate to teach some of the best students and to work with some of the best teachers, I have enjoyed teaching Physical Science, Biology I and AP Biology II.  If forced to choose, I would have to pick my classes of Biology I with freshmen as students.  Their sense of wonder, their amazement in discovery and their pride in accomplishment are constant sources of joy.

When I attended the University of Texas at Austin, I decided to get my teaching certificate while majoring in Biology. My husband and I met while we were in college.  I really impressed him when we were dating and I made him go with me to check cultures in the Microbiology incubator.  After graduation I worked in a hospital lab before I decided to teach. I was just getting past the shock of my first two years of teaching when my first child was born.  For about thirteen years I was lucky enough to be able to stay at home with my children. During those years out of the profession, I completed my Masters in Science Education, lived in Canada for four years, had another child, directed a Sex Education Program at my church, volunteered at my children’s schools, and did all those things socially acceptable for stay-at-home Moms to do. When I returned to teaching, I realized what I loved so much about it. I love working with challenging, inspiring students and with dedicated, innovative teachers.

My husband and I have been married for 33 years. He is originally from New Orleans while I am a native Houstonian. We have two grown children.  As they were growing up, we encouraged them to expand their horizons. They took us up on that. Our son attended school in Massachusetts and now lives in New York.  Our daughter attended school in California and worked in California and Colorado.  Luckily, she has returned to Houston since her Vermont-born husband works at NASA.

At various times during my career, I have presented at local, state and national conferences or conventions and I have worked on committees developing state standards and tests in science.  I believe that you can only be a great teacher if you work to share your experience and expertise with others. My reluctance to learn to say “no” when asked to help a group in need has found me sponsoring or coaching such diverse groups as Drill Team, Student Council, Science Olympiad, and Science National Honor Society.

While I sometimes feel that the longer I teach, the more time I spend at school, I have found time to enjoy travels to many areas. Highlights of my travels would include an eight-day raft trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, touring Alaska, cruising to the Caribbean, and climbing in Colorado. Family outings to a favorite lake for water skiing are some of my favorite adventures.

I am looking forward to meeting all of the other participants in the 2002 Biology Institute.  I know I will learn much from our experiences together.
