Sr. Teresita Alicea

Biographical Information

Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico the fifth of seven children. I have lived most of my life on the island. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, I entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood, New York and obtained my Master’s degree in Secondary Science Education at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. I became a teacher as a result of my experiences as a young girl studying in school where I discovered that I had a great talent for helping my fellow students with their lessons.  I have been teaching science for 12 years at the secondary level. I have taught biology, chemistry, and physics.  I was the principal in Academia San Luis in Lajas, Puerto Rico for 11 years. Presently, I am teaching science at Academia Maria Reina which is a 7 to 12 girl preparatory school.  I teach biology, chemistry and an advanced physics class which is virtual physics class with Northwestern University of Chicago.

As I mentioned above I am just returning to teaching after serving in administration for a number of years and feel the need to update myself with all the advances in research that have taken place. I had the opportunity to attend the National Association of Biology Teachers Convention in Montreal, Canada this past November which inspired me to continue to seek out opportunities like the Summer Institute which will help me keep abreast of the latest teaching strategies and techniques in science.  I am looking forward to meeting all of you to share and be enriched by our shared experience.

Jeffrey S. Anderson

Biographical Information

I was raised in Kalispell, Montana, which is a gateway city to Glacier National Park. Living in this scenic and beautiful area helped to spawn my love of the natural and environmental sciences. I attended college at Northwest Wyoming and the University of Montana on a Wrestling scholarship.  I gained degrees in Biology, Zoology, Geology, and Health Environment.

I had the opportunity to return to my hometown after 4 years of teaching in the Eastern side of Montana. I have been teaching Biology and Geology at Flathead High School for 11 years.  Every year has provided new and exciting challenges.

Because of the area I live in, I try to take full advantage of any outdoor activity that comes my way.  During the summers I hike, mountain bike, whitewater kayak, camp and travel.  In the winter I snow shoe, snow ski, back country ski and attend winter camp.  My life is a true blend of my love of science and the outdoors.

Sarah Joy Anderson

Biographical Information

My name is Sarah Joy Anderson, and I have been teaching for five years. I have taught 7th/8th grade English, 7th grade Pre AP Life Science, 9th grade Pre AP Biology, 10th grade regular Biology, 11th/12th Anatomy and Physiology, and 11th/12th AP Biology.

What brought me to the teaching profession?  My parents, grandmother, uncle and aunt were all teachers; teaching just seemed to be the right thing to do!  But if I had to give a specific reason for why I became a teacher, I would have to say it was because of my mom. My mom is an excellent example of what a TEACHER should be. She is a compassionate, patient, encouraging, enthusiastic teacher who loves learning.  She always finds a way to make learning fun.  (She even has a sneaky way of making you learn without knowing that you’ve just learned something.)

My mom fostered a desire for knowledge in me when I was very young by never brushing aside my questions.  If she didn’t know the answer, we would look it up. On Saturday, we would go to the museum.  If we didn’t have any money, we would walk through the park, and mom would tell me the names of the flowers and trees.  If I wanted to cut up the frozen hearts and gizzards that came stuffed in our chickens, she would let me.

My mom helped me make the decision to become a teacher.  I thought about medical school or nursing but I really just wanted to talk about science.  Where else could I share the same wide-eyed enthusiasm that I knew as a child? I wanted to share all the cool science things I had learned and I want to learn more!

Margery S. Barkman

Biographical Information

I have been teaching in the U.S. and in several other countries for over 20 years. I have taught in British-system and Chinese schools as well as several U.S. schools. I enjoy teaching Chemistry as well as Biology but my greatest enjoyment is teaching the Anatomy and Physiology course to high school juniors and seniors.  I had quit teaching for a while in the late 1980’s (burn-out) and worked as office manager in a business office for a number of years. When that got to be too routine and boring, I arranged my work schedule to take some regular courses and returned to teaching about 8 years ago.  I have traveled to and lived in a number of countries in the world, have raised one daughter and am an “empty nester”.
