Position / Teaching assignment:  Biology, Environmental Science and one section of A.P. Environmental Science.

Favorite Courses:
I’m most comfortable teaching Biology. We’re using block scheduling, and I have endless stream of labs to break up the 90-minute period. Students enjoy setting up the labs and doing them. It’s pretty relaxing for me. My "regular" Environmental Science course has no prerequisite, and so I get a lot of students who have failed Biology and Physical Science and don’t really care much about what my course has to offer. These classes commonly start out with 30+ students, and while they like to do labs, their math and reading skills leave quite a bit to be desired.  They get frustrated pretty easily. I drive a bus, and so I take them on field trips, but I’m not always pleased that we actually use the trips effectively. Students in my A.P. course are so impressive that I find myself pleasantly stressed out thinking of ways to challenge them. I don’t have to put notes on the board, and often I let them do the teaching—which they love to do. They enjoy field trips, and they expect to learn something while on them, in addition to having fun. They enjoy role-playing exercises and difficult tests with essays.  I shift from A.P. to regular Env. Sci., and it’s like a change from day to night.

Particular Interests: I am an outdoor person who never has any problem finding something to do—work or play.  I’m a single parent raising two boys—ages 10 and 14—and we love canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming in local waters.  The Arkansas Ozarks are a veritable paradise in that regard.  We’re also avid hikers and campers.  I have my home up for sale, and I’m a thrilled at the prospect of starting all over again, living off the grid and in a sustainable manner—all those things I talk and dream about.  I actually like to work outdoors as well: clear brush, chop wood, garden, etc. Over all, I’m an amiable individual who likes to talk about politics and books and listen to what other people have to say.

Years Teaching: I began teaching seven years ago at the age of 42. I used to be a stationary engineer (running power plant machinery) and decided I needed more of a challenge. Did I ever get my wish!
