Our Research Experience

Our Research

As part of our experience with the Woodrow Wilson Foundation Environmental Institute, we focused on one aspect of environmental research under the direct instruction of a mentor. Our mentor, Dr. Joel Tenenbaum of SUNY Purchase, focused on looking at climate change in relation to the accuracy of climate data. In addition to acquiring background information on the history of supersonic aircraft and the politics behind them, we analyzed the depiction of the jet stream in relation to aircraft data. In order to be educated about climate data, we discussed the hierarchy of forecasting and studied the characteristics of Earth's convective circulations. Lastly, we briefly calculated the relationship between strengths of high pressure and low pressure with the speed of wind by looking at its derivatives.

After absorbing all this information, we formulated a question focusing on one flight and compared its data to the analyses from three international weather centers. We wanted to find out if the data recorded by the aircraft differed from the analyses.
