Classroom Activities:

  1. Use the LaMotte or Hash water kits, which can be purchased from supply companies, to test 1 the water quality in your local water reservoir.
  2. Check the water quality in a local stream/pond/lake/or river for various water characteristics. This may be done several times during the school year in order to check for variations.
  3. Check the water at school or have students bring in samples to test for lead contamination that may have entered the water system.
  4. Obtain GIS maps and trace the local watershed areas.
  5. Compare the quality of bottled water to the local tap water.
  6. Local water treatment and sewage plants will provide tours and demonstrations on water testing.
  7. Purchase the coliform bacteria from a supply company (Flinn) and check local streams or water supplies for contamination.
