Students as citizen scientists
A variety of projects connecting
students with professional scientists.
Examples include: Satellite telemetry
on Swainson’s hawks migrating from Utah to Argentina; tagging and releasing
Rocky Mountain monarch butterflies to determine their migration routes;
monitoring of native songbird species; raise and release of gamebirds and
freshwater fishes; interschool communications via homing pigeons;
designing/building a 12 acre wildlife habitat area; monitoring the local
watershed quality; writing the notebook series on new species for Project Wild;
building and placing many bird houses and bathouses; constructing an
interpretive trail for the local State Park; etc.
Ron Hellstern teaches 9th grade Earth Systems Science in Utah at an 8-9 Center that has 1100 students. The course is based upon the systems of the atmosphere, water, land, biological and earth as part of a space system. It has a strong environmental theme that ties all the topics together.
He
is also the chairman of the Elementary/Secondary Education Commission for the
North American Association for Environmental Education; the NSTA Tapestry
Ambassador for Utah, and on the State Envirothon Steering Committee.
Outdoor activities: whitewater rafting, hiking, biking, outdoor
photography,
canoeing, birding, etc.
