I
was born feet first in Milwaukee, WI, and grew up in Madison, WI where I
experienced the formative years of my education. From kindergarten through 5th grade, I attended
Wingra, a small learner-centered school with open classrooms and teachers who
encouraged me to ask questions, form my own opinions, and express myself
creatively. This experience has stayed
with me, and continues to influence and inform my philosophy of education and
pedagogical practices to this day.
From
6-12th grade, I attended my local public middle and high schooI, and
then I went on to study Spanish language and literature at the University of
Wisconsin. The highlight of my college
years was my junior year abroad in Madrid, Spain. After graduating with a BA In 1993, I spent a year living in a
small city in the north of Brazil called Macapa, where I provided home
schooling for the daughter of two American based researchers who were
conducting an ecological project in small rainforest communities near
Macapa.
Through
my contact with them, my interest in the environment was peaked, and I went on
to get my Master’s Degree from Antioch New England Graduate School in the area
of Environmental/Science Education. I
completed my student teaching at Arturo Schomburg Satellite Academy High School
in the South Bronx, and the following year, was hired at another site of
Satellite academy on the Lower East Side (Satellite Academy Forsyth
Street).
I
learned about the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship program from Paul
Melkonian, my team member on this program, and the other science teacher at my
school.
