Michael Lowry
Michael is a native Kentuckian, having grown up in Louisville. During his senior year at Centre, Michael traveled to Argonne National Laboratory to research organic superconductors. Michael did graduate work in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Louisville, working on polymer chemistry and plastic lenses. While at Vanderbilt, he could not make up his mind what to study so ended up juggling three areas (biology, chemistry and physics). Michael was a participant in the Kligenstein Summer Institute at Columbia University. As a DOE TRAC associate, he studied the applications of laser technologies at Ames National Laboratory. An Access Excellence Fellow, Michael assisted in the creation of an Internet database for use by science teachers (http://www.gene.com/ae). He also has done field research involving black bears as part of the Earthwatch expedition. As part of a National Endowment for the Humanitites Summer Seminar, Michael traveled to Greece. While there, he pondered the thoughts of Plato. Michael sailed around the North Atlantic as a crew member aboard the research vessel SSV Westward doing oceangraphic research through the SEA Education Program. Michael recently was an instructor for the Duke TIP program. He has published articles in Inorganic Chemistry, Radford Writer, and Material Chemistry, The Clearing House and is particularly interested in using writing as means to learn science. A passion of his is the study of martial arts. He is an avid reader, a news junkie, an opera fan, as well as a card carrying member of the ACLU.
