For us as teachers, the feasibility of having at our disposal a wind tunnel or water tunnel is quite remote. However, this model can be used to study two-dimensional flows under controlled conditions. Once a film starts to run, it produces two-dimensional patterns depending on the frame’s design. Some examples include frames that produce jets, cavity flow, grid turbulence and vortex shedding. The patterns are visible due to the light interference effects produced by small variations in the film thickness.
