Effect of Carbon Dioxide Concentration
on Lentil Growth
Materials-(for each set up)
1-10 mL graduated cylinder or
beaker
3 paper towels
3-1gallon size resealable plastic
bags
water
15 lentils
effervescent antacid tablets
2 film canisters
ruler
Procedure:
1. Moisten 3 paper towels
with water (enough to keep the seeds moist, but don't over soak them).
Fold the paper towel in half.
2. Place 5 lentils on
each paper towel.
3. Place the paper
towels and lentils in the three resealable plastic bags. Label them:
No effervescent antacid tablet, 1/2 effervescent antacid
tablet, and 1/4 effervescent antacid tablet.
4. Zip the No effervescent
antacid tablet bag closed.
5. In the other two bags,
place one film canister each.
6. Put 1/2
of an effervescent antacid tablet in one film canister and 1/4
of an effervescent antacid tablet in the other.
7. Add 10 mL of water
to each of the film canisters.
8. Zip the two resealable
bags closed that contain the effervescent antacid tablet. This will create
a carbon dioxide rich environment.
9. Observe each day, measure
and record root and stem length daily when they begin to grow. Measure
to the nearest millimeter.
10. Repeat steps 6-9 every
day for the length of the experiment.
