My Biography
Hello! My name is Suzanne McClung. I am a teacher in the
Upper School at St. Stephen's
& St. Agnes School in Alexandria, Virginia. I teach Chemistry
and AP Environmental Science. I was born in Los Angeles, California
and grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I earned a Bachelor of
Science degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, focussing on textile
conservation for museums and textile science. I earned my Master
of Science degree at Cornell University with a major in fiber science and
a minor in chemistry. As I learned more about the textile industry,
I became very concerned about the impact that the industry has on the environment
and so my thesis work focussed on electrochemical treatment of acid dye
wastewater and I used HPLC analysis to understand the mechanism by which
this wastewater treatment method effected dye removal. Following my master's
program, I worked as a manager of technical services for a small trade
association, but missed the teaching I had done in graduate school.
I decided to do a one year internship at a experiential learning center,
The Pilgrimage in Washington, DC. The Pilgrimage hosts youth groups
from all over the country who come to DC to do volunteer work in the inner
city. I live on site and worked with groups in their programs.
I thoroughly enjoyed my work with this age group and began to explore the
possibility of teaching science at the high school level. I began
my teaching career at Nansemond-Suffolk
Academy in Suffolk, Virginia. There I taught General Chemistry
and 9th grade Environmental Science. Following my two years at NSA,
I came to my current school where I have taught an inquiry-based experimental
design course to 9th graders in addition to the courses I teach now.
