POPULATION DYNAMICS /SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENTS
by Anthony J. Tabeek

Through the use of two main articles, a discussion and a work project, students will learn the many facets of population studies. They will learn that sustainable environments are difficult to manage . Yet most important, they will beginning to understand that our future is linked to the past.
The first article is "Are Megacities Viable? A cautionary tale from Mexico City" from Environment Jan./Feb 1996.  The article relates the growth and development of Mexico City. It reviews and considers the relationship of population growth on natural resources both in Mexico City and surrounding areas.
The second article "Easters End" By Jared M. Diamond in Discover Aug. 1995, dealt with the environmental damage that the settlers of Easter Island caused which eventually caused their society to deteriorate and disappear. The people drove their plants and animals to extinction thus offering a warning to modern society.
