WOODROW WILSON ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE INSTITUTE RUTGERS 1998

The Delaware Water Gap

Participants of the Woodrow Wilson Environmental Science Institute at Rutgers were
involved in a full day field trip to the Delaware Water Gap.  Under the leadership of their
mentor Dr. James Miller, the water resources committee enjoyed a 6 mile morning canoe trip
followed by a 2 mile hike to the top of the  gap. During the float  from Smithfield Beach
to the Kittatinny Point Visitors Center, the hardy voyagers collected water samples and
tested for nitrates, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and measured the PH of the river
water. The 2 1/2 hour 6 mile journey is only a small part of the 40 miles of the Delaware River  within the 70,000 acre National Recreation Area.
