"NASA... ON THE CUTTING EDGE"
Educational Series Returns for 1998-99

The NASA... On the Cutting Edge series returns to television with
four interactive live educational programs scheduled for 1998-99.
Below is a sneak preview of the program schedule and registration
information.

"OUR WATER PLANET FROM SPACE"

Program 1: "Oceans in Motion!"
Broadcast: October 21, 1998, 2-2:30 p.m. EST

Ocean circulation - the movement of water carrying heat and matter -
not only affects life in the oceans but also weather and climate
round the world. Because the oceans are so expansive, covering two-
thirds of Earth, the only way to study them on a broad scale is by
observing them from space. NASA and its partners use this unique
vantage point to measure ocean height, winds, and temperature. Come
learn about these ocean features, how ocean circulation works, and
the important role it plays in our lives.

Program 2: "The Color of Oceans"
Broadcast: October 22, 1998, 2-2:30 p.m. EST

How blue is the deep, blue sea? Oceans are actually many shades of
blue, green and even red. This spectrum of color tells us a lot
about the health of our oceans, which affects life on Earth. NASA's
ocean-color observations from space give us the big picture of
oceans and help to understand the role oceans play in global change.
Discover the excitement and importance of viewing from high above
Earth this ever-changing portrait of ocean productivity, ecosystems,
and human impacts.

"SMALL BODIES, BIG IMPACT"

Program 1: "Cool Comets"
Broadcast: March 10, 1999, 2-2:30 p.m., EST

Comets are so cool, they're actually icy! As these cosmic snowballs
approach the Sun, they turn into beautiful celestial bodies we can
see form Earth. Now, for the first time ever, a high-tech NASA
mission will capture comet dust samples and bring them back to
Earth. The samples will give us new information about comets and
help us understand the origins of our solar system. Take a journey
with NASA into space as we explore the mysteries of comets and the
secrets of our distant past.

Program 2: "Awesome Asteroids"
Broadcast: March 11, 1999, 2-2:30 p.m. EST

Asteroids get a lot of attention. It's no wonder - small ones
continually pelt the Earth and a large one may have caused the
extinction of the dinosaurs. But that's just part of their story.
Space missions to orbit and map a near-Earth asteroid for the first
time will help us discover more about these "minor planets," and
could reveal clues about the formation of our solar system... Get
answers to your questions about asteroids directly from the
scientists keeping tabs on them. And, see a sneak preview of NASA's
exciting plans to put a rover on an asteroid!
