Breeze-Like Convection

ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENON AND AIR TEMPERATURE by Denise Peterson

INVESTIGATION B: BREEZE-LIKE CONVECTION

OBJECTIVE: The students will demonstrate that heat generated by the candle causes a breeze-like
circulation.

MATERIALS: box with a glass front or an aquarium
                          two paper pipes (for chimneys)
                          candle
                          incense stick
                          matches

PROCEDURE: 1. Make a box with a glass front and two paper pipes as chimneys
                               (one toward each end of the box).
                           2. Light the candle and the incense stick.
                           3. Place the candle below one chimney and hold the incense stick above
                               the other.
                           4. Observe.
