ATMOSPHERIC PHENOMENON AND AIR TEMPERATURE             by Denise Peterson

INVESTIGATION  A:  HEAT CONVECTION

OBJECTIVE:  The students will demonstrate that the heat of a burning candle decreases the air density.
MATERIALS:  aluminum foil or heavy paper
                          wire
                          scissors
                          candle
                          matches
PROCEDURE:  1.  Cut a circular disk out of foil or heavy paper.
                           2.  Make a rotor by cutting teeth in the outer edges of the circle.
                           3.  Put an angle on teeth for best results (like a house fan).
                           4.  Support the rotor on the bent wire.
                           5.  Hold it over the flame of a candle.
                           6.  Observe.
