Travel and Logistics - Princeton

1998 Woodrow Wilson Environmental Science Institute

Travel, Registration, Arrival, and Campus Information

Reimbursable air and train travel arrangements must be made through Ryland Stacy, AMEX: 1-800-468-3494. Please return your travel form to her whether you plan to drive or make other travel arrangements.

Newark Airport is the only destination airport for the institute. The Foundation will provide transportation from Newark Airport to and from the institute campus.

Arrival should be arranged so that you are available to attend the institute reception at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28th. You may need to schedule an early arrival on Saturday, June 27th.

Campus Maps and Directions are available through the Princeton University web site. For travel directions see www.princeton.edu/Mains/PrincetonTravel.shtml; for campus maps and building locations see www.princeton.edu/cgi/map.

Registration will take place upon arrival at Princeton's Forbes Dormitory, beginning Saturday, June 27th. You will receive room keys and University staff will take deposits on telephones, and issue dining cards.

Early Registration will be available for those arriving on Saturday. If you are driving and plan to arrive on Saturday please notify us. Registration will take place at Forbes Dormitory, times to be announced. After 5 p.m. a key will be left for you in the Public Safety Office located in Stanhope Hall, which is open 24 hours.

Institute Opening will be Sunday June 28th at 5 p.m. A reception will be held in the dining hall -- site is yet to be determined.

Parking for those planning to drive to the institute is permitted in lot #23. Enter the Princeton University campus from Faculty Road and ask the guard for directions. There is no parking fee; we will supply you with a Woodrow Wilson Institute tag to place in your dashboard. Parking is not permitted in front of Forbes Dormitory except to drop off items.

Meeting Rooms for the institute are detailed on a separate page.

What to Bring

Money: Stipend checks will be mailed to your home in mid-June. However, if you so designated on your Acceptance Form, your stipend will be given to you when you arrive in Princeton. Arrangements for cashing stipend checks will be made with a local bank, but bring Travelers Checks or use automated teller machines as banks will not cash personal checks. Do not bring large amounts of cash as dorm rooms are not ever completely secure.

Clothing: Temperatures in the 80s to 100s with 85% or higher humidity are common. Bring long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and sneakers or hiking boots for field trips, as New Jersey is tick country. Shorts and T-shirts are the rule for everyday sessions, but you may want a variety of clothing for excursions (New York City) and opening and closing receptions.

Shoes: There is plenty of walking on campus and on field trips. You’ll need comfortable walking shoes.

Computers and Other Appliances: Computers are vital to the institute and are available on campus, so you are not required to bring your own. If you normally use a laptop, you'll really want it here. A study lamp is desirable as the only light is often a ceiling fixture.

Teaching materials: You will need 60 copies of a highly valued personal student activity for the idea exchange. You can make copies on or near campus.

What to Expect

Meals are provided, including breakfast, lunch and dinner, Monday through Friday, breakfast on Saturday, and dinner on Sunday. Dining times:

Breakfast 7:00am -- 9:00am
Lunch 12:00pm -- 1:30pm
Dinner 5:00pm -- 6:30pm

Living quarters are typical dormitory rooms; either 2, 3, or 4-person. Room furnishings are sparse. Participants are expected to keep your living quarters clean. Brooms, etc. are provided.

Linens are provided and can be exchanged for a clean set once a week.

Laundry facilities, coin-operated washers and dryers, are available in the dorms.

Private phones for each dorm room are available (there is a small University rental charge). Bring a phone charge card for long-distance calls. For those who choose not to rent a phone, emergency messages can be taken at The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, 609-452-7007, Extension 21.

Personal photocopying or copies for your school are not provided through the institute. There are nearby places where you can copy personal materials day or evening. You can also access official institute materials on the web later, saving shipping charges.

Firestone Library Privileges

One of the advantages of being at Princeton University is the opportunity to use its wonderful Firestone Library. Our privileges are limited, as are those of anyone not attending Princeton University on a full-time basis. You will have access to the library during regular library hours, but books cannot be checked out. They must be used on the premises. Photocopy machines are available on a cash basis in the library.

Firestone requires that Institute participants who use the library must wear the Woodrow Wilson Institute name identification provided and show some form of personal I.D. (such as a driver's license). They prefer photo I.D. cards, but that is not a requirement.

Athletic Facilities

Woodrow Wilson participants will have access to Princeton University athletic facilities. In order to use these facilities participants must purchase athletic chits at the Wilcox Hall Front Desk. Each chit costs $3.00 and entitles you to one visit to Dillon Gymnasium (swimming pool, fitness room, etc.) or one hour of tennis.
