(Scale:  1-5, students may receive "4" or "2" if student work fits two adjacent columns)

Excellent - 5 Fair - 3 Poor - 1
Hypothesis Student defines a scientific problem that can be tested using a variable that is mentioned in the hypothesis statement. Hypothesis is stated in question form or student isn't clear on what problem is being investigated. Wording is very general on what his investigation is about. Hypothesis may be missing.
Experimental Design Student designs an experiment step by step that is easy to follow.  Student includes a summary of how to collect data. Students list steps but some are missing, out of order, or unclear. Nothing mentioned about data collection.                                                                          Student generalizes on how to do the experiment. Step by step list of instructions is missing.
Data Collection Student has collected data in a well organized data table or chart which includes a title, labels, and correct units. Appropriate data collection techniques were used. Data collection was random, partially inaccurate, or used inappropriate collection methods. Data table lacks some necessary features or is incomplete. No organized data table or data collection methods are used.
Conclusion Conclusion is based on the data collected and refers to the original hypothesis. Conclusion makes logical sense.                                                    Conclusion may include inference about data collected and may not make a concrete connection to the hypothesis.  Conclusion may or may not relate to hypothesis, may not be based on data collected, or may be nonsensical.
