Greenhouse Gases and Their Production

By:   Meegan Zimmerman - Bozeman, MT
Joseph Keehn  - Kansas City, KS
Matthew Fritz  - Wildwood Crest, NJ

Grade Level:

These activities are suitable for middle school students (grades 6-8).  They could easily be extended for use with older students.

Brief Overview:

The purpose of this web site is to show students how greenhouse gases are produced in a natural setting. In addition to the background information and resources there are activities for the most important greenhouse gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, and methane). The activities are designed to first model scientific inquiry for the students with an experiment. Then the students are challenged to design an experiment of their own. We suggest that you try the activities before your students so that you can trouble shoot the matierials and procedures. You do not need to try out the student designed experiments before the students do but you should check the planned procedure for safety before the student begins.
National Science Education Standards:   The following National Science Education Standards are addressed in this unit:
Science Content Standards (Grades 5-8)
A.  Science as Inquiry   This includes all phases of learning science through inquiry.
D.  Earth and Space Science  The structure of arth systems including cloud formation, the water cycle, and gases in the atmosphere.
G.  Nature of Science  Students answer scientific questions through investigation and observation.
