Dear GLOBE Franchises: Following is some information about an
international children's conference provided to me by the United Nations
Environment Program. Although the deadline for application is extremely
short, this could be an excellent opportunity! Peggy
The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is presenting the second
International Children's Conference on the Environment from 23 to 25
November 1998 in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The Conference will bring together 150 children between the ages of 10 and
12 to learn and voice their concerns about the state of the environment,
and also to discuss preparations for the Millennium International
Children's Conference on the Environment being planned for 22 to 24 May
2000 in Eastbourne, England.
The themes for the 1998 Conference are "wildlife in danger," waste and
recycling," "sustainable development and the media," "sharing our planet,"
"water is life," and "living in cities." For three days, youngsters will
have the opportunity to learn about and present projects relating to the
above themes. Excursions are also being planned.
The Conference organizers are prepared to pay air fare for the youth
participants that are chosen. Organizers hope to have enough money to
cover adult escort travel costs as well. In any case, all participants are
expected to come up with the "registration" fee of NZ$200.
Because of the late identification of sponsors, information about the
conference is just now being circulated by UNEP. The deadline for
nomination of candidates is 30 August. The application form is available
at the UNEP Website: http://www.unep/event/icc . Questions can be
