Here are the ideas we brainstormed regarding outreach workshops:

Things to consider:

1. Keep in mind that we are "prophets in our own lands.."

2. Try to gain district/ region/ state support. (ex. $ for
participants, graduate credit)

Things needed for workshop:
1. Great speakers- State climatologist; fisheries; weather
service; state epidemiologist; soil & water expert; DNR,
Conservation education; park service; district/area educational
consultants (AEA's)

2. Workshop style- Model technology in teaching; model inquiry;
rent technology; technology lessons (access web); invite real students;
relevant lessons; remember to accommodate elementary teachers; purchase
"Stella Program" and other computer modeling programs; look to
interactive animated sites for use of collected data; "Make & Take"
activities; participant-shared activities

Topics of Participants in Environmental Fellowship at Princeton and
Rutgers:
1. "Climate & Weather"- Precipitation related to farming, landscape
changes; different water cycles
2. "Conclusion of total effects of global warming"- biodiversity,
pants, human health, animals, sea level
3. "Energy & earth systems"- fossils fuels and burning of coal and
various types of wood
4. Phytoremedication
5. "Policies/Issues"- how are policies made and how does society change
these polices such as recycling & emission standards
6. "River System Changes"- water systems
7. "El Nino"- effects on growing season; Atlanta's ozone, snowfall
8. "Infectious Diseases"- current trends in infectious diseases related
to global warming; vectors of transmission; antibiotic resistance.
9. "Fisheries"- investigating upwellings; investigating 4 types of fish
species in the Atlantic; data collected via satelite
10. "Phytoplankton"- how does UV light effect growth
11. "Effects of El Nino"

Answers to your Questions:

1. Can "non-woodies" be facilitators for Torch? 1998 participants are
only eligible for NSF funds; if non-Woodies help facilitate funds must
come from other sources. The institute does not encourage you to do
this.

2. What if I am the only person from my district, how can I present a
workshop? Woodies can pair up by districts and by regions. There are
many people here from different regions to work with.

3. Can I do more than 1 Torch workshop? Yes, but need to submit an
application for each Torch workshop

4. If I do a Torch workshop, do I also do the 20 hours of inservice?
No. Being a facilitator for Torch counts for your 20 hours.

5. What does the $7500 count for? This money approximately $7500, will
help pay for 2 facilitators (totally $4000) and other expenses regarding
organizing a Torch workshop. Institute expects schools, etc. to help
finance

6. What do I need to do before I leave regarding Outreach? Be sure to
have an application form for Torch and a copy of a past sample
application from last year.

7. Does the 20 inservice hours include planning? No. 20 hours is
teacher contact time.

I know Maddie sent out a list of answers to other groups' questions this
week. Please let me know if you have other questions.
