Each year in August/September after the institutes, WWNFF writes your
supervisors (superintendent and principal, or equivalent) to let them
know you successfully completed the summer work. We include a press
release with your name. We copy you and so you also receive a press
release.

Following is a draft for the Rutgers ES Institute. We'll have three
different press releases, depending on the institute you attend. Your
comments are welcome.

TEACHERS DEEPEN KNOWLEDGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
FIELD(fname) FIELD(lname) from FIELD(SCHOOL), FIELD(SCHCITY),
FIELD(STATE), was among 45 teachers selected to experience recent
research and teaching approaches in middle and high school environmental
science with the coaching of university professors during four weeks of
study on the Rutgers - New Brunswick campus in July 1998. The teachers
represented all regions of the United States and its possessions as well
as urban, suburban, and rural schools as they took part in the Leadership
Program for Teachers, a program of The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship
Foundation, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The Woodrow Wilson Leadership Program for Teachers, nationally recognized
since 1982, is dedicated to the idea that teachers themselves develop the
most exciting new learning strategies for their peers. Thus, teachers
who attend the institute make themselves available to colleagues once
they return to their home districts and schools. Over 2000 teachers have
been involved in institutes of various disciplines in the past fifteen
years, improving the education of hundreds of thousands of students.
This year the effect is even more widespread since the
teachers-participants shared their findings on the World Wide Web - as
most researchers do today. The web pages will be maintained and updated
by the teachers, supported by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship
Foundation and NSF funding. The teachers' work can be found at
http://www.woodrow.org.
Some participants will carry their new knowledge to other teachers in
workshops also administered by Woodrow Wilson and funded by [NSF] in
collaboration with schools, districts, and universities. Most of the
teachers will also be available to community groups to present ideas and
concepts from the institute.
The Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation is an independent,
non-profit organization dedicated to excellence in education since 1945
through the identification of critical needs and the development of
effective national programs to address them. Its program areas include
fellowships for graduate studies, leadership programs for school
teachers, career opportunity programs for minorities, college programs
and national service programs.
