Long Beach Polytechnic High School

Dear Woodies,
Long Beach Poly started a block schedule three years ago. We have two
magnet programs in which students take seven classes; regular program
students take six classes. Each school day has three blocks of 95
minutes each. Students attend the same class every other day. A
single period from 1:50 to 2:40 meets every day for the students with
seven classes, and the students with six classes attend a tutorial
during that time.

Tutorial has had very limited success. Some teachers and
administrators would say that tutorial has had no success. Ten to
twelve faculty members are serving on a committee that is trying to
design a different schedule. We are asking for examples of
alternative schedules that have been tried or are now being tried.

I know that you are busy, and I apologize for asking on such short
notice. If any of you have experience with alternative schedules, we
would like to know about them. Please send the times and meeting days
for the schedule and also the pros and cons. I need to have these to
committee members by Friday, October 31.

Any help, thoughts, or comments would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
jsump
