Regarding GIS software: ESRI which produces ArcView puts out for free an
earlier version of Arcview that you can download. It works fine for basic
viewing etc.
Also, by all means, learn to use the free NIH Image software and others that
are both for IBM and Mac environments. There are several excellent sites
dealing
with how to use it in teaching. The "Learning with Satellites" project
("Eyes in
the Sky") site - found in my GIS/RS links puts you in touch with several
NASA funded
projects doing image processing.
Also, check out the Dept of Geology at Smith College in Massachussets; they use
NIH Image a lot, have an excellent tutorial online with links to other
sites, etc.
