3. Context for outreach event:

*A two week, voluntary summer institute through Long Beach Unified School District, but open to any high school or middle school teacher

*The Institute provides ongoing professional development with University credit from California State University Long Beach. (pending)

*Completion of the Institute hours counts toward California's professional development credential renewal requirements

The Institute will be a two-week, one time event.

  • Dates: June 22 through July 3, 1998
  • Days: Monday through Friday
  • Time: 7:30 am - 4:30 pm
  • Continental breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack provided daily

Included in the Institute's agenda:

  • an inquiry-based research project
  • field trips
  • hands-on laboratory activities
  • development of environmental science lesson plans

  • 1 classroom lecture hall
  • 3 science classroom/laboratories
  • 1 computer lab with Internet Access
  • Secured Parking facilities

8. Level of those involved: Middle and High School Teachers

9. Number of contact hours: 80 hours

10. Number and description of Internet hours: 20+

Participants will use the Internet to:

  • communicate with each other and facilitators via e-mail
  • conduct research
  • author a web page

11. Number and description of homework/lab hours:

  • as needed to complete project, lesson plans, presentations, self reflection. (estimate 16-20 hours)

12. Registration Fees or Participant Stipends

  • $25.00 registration fee refunded upon completion of 20 hours
  • $150.00 stipend to Long Beach Unified School Teachers only

13. Teacher Action component.

Participants will start developing their project before the institute and continue to collaborate and expand their project at the conclusion of the institute.

The following guidelines are in place for development of participant projects.

  • To guide participants in the selection of projects, the facilitators will collect articles from local newspapers and magazines related to relevant environmental science topics
  • Prior to data collection the participants will have an overview of earth system science and what it encompasses.
  • Prior to data collection the participants will have an overview of the Institute and what we expect them to accomplish in the two weeks. ( a clear goal of institute and projects)
  • Participants will be limited to using available equipment. A list of available equipment and materials will be given to participants (no equipment ordering)
  • Participants will be trained to use all equipment prior to going out to collect any data.
  • Participants will pick a site close to their school so that if/when they continue on with their project it will be convenient for them.
