Shape or Pattern implies only a difference in categories, not that any features or areas are more important than others. They are best used for Nominal data only.
Color also implies only a difference in categories and is also best used for Nominal data only. Exceptions are colors that are commonly accepted to mean certain things, such as red and blue respectively for high and low temperatures, and green and shades of brown for elevation.
