Ordinal scale and Interval Scale can be treated equally with regard to mapping. They both involve data that are “ordered” according to better or worse, larger or smaller. Ordinal data involves no numbers. Interval data involves numbers and statistical comparisons can be made. Together, they can be referred to as Numerical.
- Small, Medium, and Large cities [Point Data] is Ordinal scale.
5,000, 25,000, 100,000 population makes it Interval scale.
- Low, Medium, High flow of water through a canal [Line Data]
is Ordinal scale. Add numbers for cubic feet per second
to make it Interval scale.
- Shallow, Medium, Deep water [Area Data] is Ordinal scale.
Add depth in feet for Interval scale.
