Information Center for the
Environment (at UC Davis)
Uses geo-referenced data, but does not allow you
to download shape files. However, this site is great for two basic
reasons. First, it has alot of various layers
that can be queried in interesting ways (includes data for many types of
biological, habitat, physical, and administrative considerations).
For classroom demonstrations, I recommend using "ICE MAPS2: New Interactive
Natural Resources Query System". Secondly, if you are interested
in seeing how someone has set up very elaborate systems of classifications
for themes, you can view their data file classification schemes (a good
example can be seen in " Watershed Information and Spatial Data Inventory"
- click on "Spatial Data Inventory" - then click on "natural diversity
data base" - when you get the map, click on "metadata .......".

Map Layer
Warehouse
What kind of software do I need to do anything with these map layers?
The map layers can be used in desktop mapping, computer-aided drafting
and design, image processing, and geographic information systems. These
files will not work with many common types of software you may use at home
or in the office (including word processors, spreadsheets, and data base
managers). We have provided a basic online geographic information system
that allows you to view and query the map layers using your web browser.

Earth
Moon Viewer
Viewing the Earth
You can view either a map of the Earth showing the day and night regions
at this moment, or view the Earth from the Sun, the Moon, the night side
of the Earth, above any location on the planet specified by latitude, longitude
and altitude, from a satellite in Earth orbit, or above various cities
around the globe.
Images can be generated based on a full-colour image of the Earth by
day and night, a topographical map of the Earth, up-to-date weather satellite
imagery, or a composite image of cloud cover superimposed on a map of the
Earth, or a colour composite which shows clouds, land and sea temperatures,
and ice. Expert mode allows you additional control over the generation
of the image. You can compose a custom request with frequently-used parameters
and save it as a hotlist or bookmark item in your browser.

Geographic
Information Systems - GIS
What is a GIS?
In the strictest sense, a GIS is a computer system capable of assembling,
storing, manipulating, and displaying geographically referenced information
, i.e. data identified according to their locations. Practitioners also
regard the total GIS as including operating personnel and the data that
go into the system.

The National Atlas of
the United States of America
The U.S. Geological Survey and its partners began work on The
National Atlas of the United States of America in 1997. The National Atlas
is designed to promote greater geographic awareness through the development
and delivery of products that provide easy to use, map-like views of our
natural and socio-cultural landscapes. The National Atlas is being designed
to serve the interests and needs of a diverse populace in many ways; as
an essential reference; as a framework for information discovery; as an
instrument of education; as an aid in research; and as an accurate and
reliable source for scientific information.
The Department of Geography at California State University, Northridge
operates this FTP server for its students and the
academic community of the California State University System. In it
you will find more than 2,300 U. S. Geological Survey 30
meter DEM files of California. Each of these files contains more than
1 MB of data needed for the construction of topographic
map terrain models. These ARE NOT graphic files that can be viewed
directly. They require special interpreting software.

Maidment and Seann M. Reed -FAO/UNESCO). These exercises are intended for
self-learning in the application of GIS using Arcview to hydrologic issues
in West Africa, in particular, in Morocco. They were prepared for a short
course on GIS in Water Resources presented at the Direction Générale
de l'Hydraulique in Rabat, Morocco, on 12-14 November 1996. The exercises
were prepared by David Maidment and Seann Reed with help from Kris Martinez
and Francisco Olivera. The exercises are presented in the English, French
and Spanish languages.

Topic : How to make a Hot link for an URL (WWW) using Netscape's Composer
1. Brief explanation. If you are using Netscape Communicator, this is an active HTML and as such is not editable. When you open a page in Netscape's Composer, you will view it as it was composer and as such can be edited. Of course you can not change what is actually on the website, but you can use Save as . . . to save an edited document on your own machine. The object of this tutorial is to place an URL (website address) on the page it. While in the Composer mode, it will not be active until you save it and open it in Navigator. Try this, open this page in Composer. To do this in Navigator, go to the pull down File menu Open Page (it highlights). In the window type: http://woodrow.org/teachers/esi97-02/UOPtorch/how/hotlinks. This Hot links page will open in Composer mode.
2. To create a Hot link.
A. Copy or type the URL (universal locator resource address (WWW)). To do this Highlight the address in the location bar and with the pull down menu of Edit (copy) copy the URL.Put the cursor where you want the URL to be located on this document. An Actual Hot link: Virtual Chocolate - Mouth Watering ImagesB. Go to the pull down menu bar Format (Character properties) highlight and click on link.
C. In the box below the link to page location or local file paste the URL (pull down Edit menu (paste))example http://www.virtualchocolate.com/
D. In the box below enter text to display for new link, type exactly how you want the site nameto appear. Example : Virtual Chocolate - Mouth Watering Images.Click on apply and close the character properties box .
E. Once you have made the link on this page you must save it (File menu, Save as) and open it with Navigator to see if you link works or you need to edit it.
