My GIS Project for the Torch Institute
Research was done concerning abandoned coal mines in Pennsylvania. The problem statement being Could there be an abandoned coal mine under your home?
After researching several maps of abandoned coal mines and areas of Pennsylvania that have been mined, the hypothesis for most people is There is a possibility of an abandoned coal mine under my home.
I started with a base map of Pennsylvania with county information and no county name labels.
I used auto-label to put the names of the counties on the map.
Using geo-referenced maps that were found on the Internet, I colored coded counties that have been mined in the past.
I now have a theme for the counties of PA., and a theme for mined areas of PA.(See Map)
Next I will make a theme specifically for Allegheny County that I live in and look closer at the greater Pittsburgh Area.
