Greetings fellow Woodies,

I am sure that all of you have had a busy year so far. After all,
you are science teachers! From one busy teacher to another, I would like
your help. I will be running a two week summer institute for Goegraphic
Information Systems and Environmental Science for Teachers in early
July. Since this is the first of possibly others, I feel that it is
important to be successful and in one respect that will be full
enrollment. The insititute is a WWNFF second tier offering (outreach). I
am sure that many had envisioned that these institutes would be regional
affairs, but I am discovering through the net the appeal is quite broad,
even international. So here it is. I would appreciate your passing along
the accompanying announcement (html attachment) to any colleague you
think the institute is particularly appropriate. The institute has
several outstanding perks that will make it memorable and valuable. Of
course, transportation is not included, but the housing is incredibly
reasonable.

in fellowship, Dick

GIS &= Environmental Science Institute
for Teachers=A0 grades 4-= 12
July 6-July17, 1998
The Woodrow Wilson Nation= al Fellowship Foundation
Teacher Outreach Program<= /FONT>
University of the Pacific= , Stockton, California
=A0
Description: This 12 day institute will focus on the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in teaching environmental science. Twenty hours of training will be devoted specifically to learn ArcView GIS software for MAC and PC. ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institu= te) will provide a complete software package for=A0 each participant gratis. Sixty hours will be devoted to formal instruction and practical applicati= on of GIS and environmental science. The environmental themes to be emphasiz= ed are seismology and hydrology and the application of geographic informatio= n systems in general. Other instructional topics will include project based learning and internet publishing. A two day mid-course field trip will examine the geology and hydrology of central California.

ArcView is a computer program for GIS which allows users to create rel= ational maps to represent data from a variety of sources. Each type of data forms a layer of geo-referenced polygons which can be superimposed onto a map. Multiple layers can reveal relationships between various environmental parameters. This powerful tool helps students to see and discover these relationships and can become the basis of project based learning on issue= s that affect student lives. For this institute, ArcView will become the primary tool to teach environmental science.

Participants will develop environmental GIS projects which may be rela= ted to, but not limited to the themes, seismology and hydrology. These projec= ts are to be published on the World Wide Web. In addition to the 80 hours of formal instruction, participants will be expected to spend an addition= al 20 hours in utilizing the Internet for environmental science education purposes.
