Frequently Asked Questions

1997 Woodrow Wilson Environmental Science Institute

(Updated: 7/09/97)

Send your questions (and if possible, answers) about logistics and technical matters to the appropriate staff member:

The ESI97 list is also a great place to ask questions, since all the participants and staff can then contribute to the answer.
Q:How can we send snail mail, fax, and send packages???

You can use the U.S. Postal System's conveniently and strategically placed mail boxes located around Princeton to mail their personal letters. There is also a US Post Office right around the corner from Nassau Inn (near Halo Pub...yum...).
You are also asked to rely on the commercial service providers such as MailBoxes, Pequad's or Kinko's for personal faxing and shipping (UPS, Fedex, etc.) needs.

Q: What can we do about dorm problems?
All housing problems should be addressed to the helpful folks at the University Conference Office. They can be reached at 258-3371.

Q: I know we'll be spending some time outdoors. Are there other things I should bring besides what was listed on the mailing of information?
A: Here are some other suggested items:

Q: What is involved with the activity sharing and computer fair sessions?
A: In previous mailings we mentioned sharing a student activity with your colleagues. There won't be time for formal presentations, but you might want to bring 20-30 copies for informal sessions. It's up to you. You can share via the web during the institute and afterwards. The same goes for the computer fair. Many of you have volunteered to do this. John Sacco will have a sign-up sheet for those still interested in presenting after we arrive.

Q: How can I get all the stuff I want to bring up there?
A: Unfortunately the Foundation isn't in the shipping business, so we all have to make tough choices. I'm bringing an extra suitcase of things and Frank Hinerman (the Biology Tech Director) is bringing an extra vehicle.  I'd suggest that you reduce the amount of equipment to a minimum (this is how we "make do" in class anyway?).  If you'd like to ship anything to the Institute ahead of you, the address is:
       Bohren's Moving & Storage
       755 Alexander Road
       Princeton, NJ  08540

       Your Name
       Woodrow Wilson ES Institute
Please remember the shipping costs, of course, are your expense.
(P.S. Don't forget to put the last two lines so your precious cargo can be routed to you!!)

Q: Can I access Princeton's Web services from our dorm rooms?
A: This is an interesting question, since most don't want to spend that much time in the dorm! Seriously the bad news is that it is Princeton's official Conference Services' policy that summer conferencees are not eligible for network connectivity through dorm rooms. This has been the policy for all temporary summer conference residents (not only WW Institutes). The good news is that you can establish dial-up access to your internet provider such as AOL from rooms via telephone. (Note: Phone service is an extra-cost option for dorm rooms.)

ATT and Netcom are two other popular examples of Internet Service Providers. Netcom has a web site with account information at http://www.netcom.com as well as services specifically designed for educational users. For information about other Internet Service Providers in the 609 area code, see http://www.thelist.com for a list of providers by area code.

If you can't use your provider's toll-free number, Geri Marchioni has provided this list of non-toll exchanges from the local (609) area code:
243, 252, 258, 279, 282, 285, 419, 430, 452, 497, 514, 520, 683, 734, 806,
921, 924, 951, and 987.

Since Frank and I will have the lab open many evenings and at times during weekends, you shouldn't suffer too much WWS ("Web Withdrawal Syndrome").
