This document is to assist participants and academic team members alike
in reflecting on what we are trying to accomplish at this institute. It
is a working document and should be considered a draft. Please ask
questions and give suggestions. This clarification will continue into the
institute.

*Project Standards*
1. CONTENT

The team project and the process for accomplishing the project
demonstrate an understanding of the content of the integrated
environmental sciences (including the human dimension), as presented in
this institute. These include but are not limited to
a. How to use the Earth Systems Approach in science teaching
b. How to use new tools and the technoloqies of collaboration
c. A better understanding of scale issues in Earth System Science

Participants will learn more about content knowledge standards at the
institute and the individual sessions.

2. LEADERSHIP

The project (and other individual and team activities) make meaningful
Contact, that is, interact with a broader public, using the web and other
modes of communication. This includes, but is not limited to,
a. working with email and the web at the institute (all participants);
b. a commitment to 20 hours of presentation to district colleagues (all
participants); and
c. possible institutes at Earth System Science Education colleges and
other sites (a subset of participants)

3. STANDARDS

The project and process reflect environmental science standards (in
content, pedagogy, etc.), both local and national. (Mapping local
standards to national standards [and deciding which ones to map to] is an
on-going institute activity.)

4. TRANSLATING THE SUMMER EXPERIENCE INTO IMPROVED STUDENT LEARNING IN
YOUR OWN CLASSROOMS

Reflection will be integrated into all the above and all institute
activities. Evaluation, follow-up, and support will include sharing
reflections with colleagues during the institute and during the academic
year.
