Please choose one of the issues set up for participants. How you map it
back to your classrooms and California is part of your summer work.
Please choose an issue and then we'll get started on answering your
questions about definition.
Good to have you on board!

Subject: Narrowing Our Focus
Team #2, Dick Filson and Carol Zucca of Stockton, CA have been narrowing
our
focus for our project proposal. We would like to take a systems approach
to
land
utilization with respect to water resource management. In California,
water
is the
real gold. It drives the economy, shapes the politics, and is pivotal in
the
battle to
maintain natural ecosystems. Our location at the held of the San Joaquin
/
Sacramento Delta brings all of these to bear. We are particularly
interested
in GIS
analysis of land use / land cover of the Great Central Valley as well as
using
STELLA programs to analzye this major ecosystem. We are also interested
in
learning the associated field methods that would support any long term
project
that arises from our work. If there are others at the institute who see a
parallel
interest in our selection, we welcome collaboration.
A few house keeping questions? What kind of resources might we
find
at
Princeton if our major interest is in California? Is there any
recommendation
for
what might be advisable for use to bring, eg., data base of stream flows
for
our
watershed? On a personal level, I have been to Princeton (95) and I know
the
general drill for the Biology Institutes, but this institute sounds a lot
different. When
can we expect to get more definitive information?
