Perhaps I can help clarify a bit. We have several "visitng expert" groups
who will be giving combinations of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on
workshops throughout the summer insitutute. The thought is that many of
these "experiences" will be directly applicable to projects being
undertaken by various teams. And some will not--for example, if you've
chosen to work on nitrate loading of streams, a workshop on soils may not
relate directly to your project. There will be a sufficient number of
"visting experts" that any one team will not be able to participate in all
of them and still have time to work on their project. Our goal is to
provide you with a smorgasboard to choose from; some teams will choose only
to attend worshops that directly pertain to their project, while others
will want to participate in the occasional off-topic workshop for their own
education.
GREEN and GLOBE are, to some extent, special cases in that the workshops
that they will offer include fairly involved projects in and of themselves.
These projects may be suitable for expansion into a teams' project for the
entire institute. To facilitiate this, we've scheduled GREEN and GLOBE
fairly early in the institute. GLOBE, in fact, will probably encourage
teams to institute long-term monitoring projects back at their home
institute, although this is obviously beyond the scope of the NLPT
institute and is purely up to individual teams.
So, yes, it is certainly possible and encourgaed that temas can choose
projects that grow out of the GLOBE and GREEN workshops. However,
participating in those workshops does not necessarily imply that your
project must be a spin off from them. For instance, the groups working on
nitrate loading of streams might want to learn about measurement
tecyhniques from the GREEN workshop, but then continue with the project as
described on the WWW page.
Hope that helps...
Mark
