Greetings!

My name is Mark Johnsson, and I will be the "continuity person" during the
Environmental Science Institute this summer. I will be the academic member
of the leadership team who will be present during the entire instiute;
other members will come and go, providing their own expertise at various
times throughout the institute. My role is to help guide you in your choice
and execution of projects, helping to provide a context for the institute,
serve as an intermediary between the groups of visiting experts and the
teacher-teams, and to generally to help tie things together. I am looking
forward to joining you!

Maybe a few words about myself are in order. I am the director of the
Environmental Science Program at Bryn Mawr College, near Philadelphia, PA.
Trained as a geologist, (I received my PhD from Pricneton, so this
institute is kind of a "return home" to me!) I worked for the US Geolgoical
Survey and taught briefly at Stanford before coming to Bryn Mawr four years
ago. My main research intersts are soils and chemical weathering, and the
ways that the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere interact to
cycle chemical constituents through the Earth system. My main active
research programs are involved in elucidating the effects of chemcial
weathering on sediment composition; and I am currently working in two field
areas: the Hawaiian Islands and the North Slope of Alaska. If you're
curious, you can learn more at my web site:

In fact, I am leaving for a month in the field (Hawaii) in less than one
week! This means that I will be returning just in time to join you in
Princeton at the end of June. I'll look forwrad to meeting all of you, and
I hope to learn at least as much from you as I can offer during July.

Cheers!

Mark
