Although I need to apologize to the alternates for any confusion that
resulted, this sort of inclusiveness would actually fit nicely with the
way we are trying to evolve the summer institutes. In the past,
post-institute outreach has been the exclusive domain of travelling
TORCH teams. This year, with the web an integral part of our
operations, *every* project will be, to some extent, an outreach
project. Indeed, we hope that you will conceive of your project, in
part, as an ongoing service to the teaching community (or if you prefer,
ongoing professional development for yourself).
As a result, the alternates could play an interesting, if informal, role
in the institute. The alternates are highly qualified teachers with a
clear interest in the subject matter. What better test audience to
provide initial feedback for the development of outreach services? I
would therefore like to invite the alternates whose interest has been
piqued, to stick around and participate vicariously in the institute
through the live web site (which will chronicle our daily progress).
