FORMATIVE QUESTIONS
Some guiding questions which
may stimulate student inquiry and which may be answered in the process
of exploring this topic:
1. What are islands and corridors?
2. Why do some species require a
habitat corridor to survive?
3. What is the problem with habitat
fragmentation?
4. How can a habitat corridor be
created?
5. What are some of the ways that
habitats can be studied?
6. What are the issues facing habitat
corridors?
Notes:
One reason for studying
fragmented habitats and habitat corridors is to focus on community and
biodiversity rather than individual “indicator species”. The size of a
particular habitat island is exceedingly important in the survival of certain
species and in the protection from predation and other disruptions. The
edges of a habitat are more vulnerable to invaders; therefore the protected
interior is crucial to the survival of certain indicator species relationships
(such as the “Spotted Owl” and old growth conifers). there is a direct
correlation between the size and shape of an island and the survival of
that ecosystem.
