Log out. Each time a (computer) user logs in, the computer identifies the person and gives them access. With this access, the user can use the programs on the computer, access his/her e-mail, and save his/her work. Your password must remain private at all times. After you are done using a computer in the cluster, you must log out. If you do not log out, your files will be accessible to the next person who uses the computer. To prevent this, log off after you are done using the computer and it will be ready for the next person to use. On the Macintosh there is no way to log out. To make sure no one can access your files, make sure you have closed all the applications you were using (especially Netscape) and that you have logged out of macfiles (see below). Save your work. There are many ways and places to save work (ex. H drive, disk) and it behooves all users to utilize these features. The computer does not save your work on it's own. It must be told when, where, and what to save. Please, save your work often. You never know when an accident may happen and your work will be lost. Drive H. Princeton's PCs allow you to save your work onto the H drive. Your H drive is specific to your login. Once you save work on it, you can go to any PC on campus and retrieve your work. Macfiles. Macfiles is the Macintosh equivalent to the H Drive. You can save files to the Princeton server on a Macintosh in the macfiles folder. In order to open your folder go to the chooser (in the apple menu). Select "appleshare" (the icon is in the upper right hand corner) by clicking on it once. Then scroll up in the list below and select "PU_CIT_Services" by clicking on it once. Then select "phoenix" from the list to the right by clicking on it twice. Enter your username (login) and password. The macfiles icon should appear on your desktop and you can save files to this folder. Important: make sure you log out of macfiles after you are done using it. To do this, drag the macfiles icon (which is on the desktop) to the trash. (Don't worry- this will not erase macfiles.) For a more detailed, step-by-step explanation, click here.Note: If you are going to be using a file that you saved on a Macintosh in macfiles on a PC you need to save the file on the Mac with a name that ends with the appropriate 3 letter suffix. If you do not do this, you will not be able to access that file on the PC. For example, a Microsoft Word document must be saved with as "document.doc" instead of just "document." Common suffixes include *.doc (Microsoft Word), *.jpg (jpeg- picture or graphic), *.gif (gif- picture or graphic), *.xls (Microsoft Excel), *.txt (plain text file), *.html or *.htm (html document for a webpage) Saving Bookmarks. You can bookmark files in Netscape for easy reference. Once you have this list, you will probably want to save it. To save the list go to "Bookmarks" and then select "edit bookmarks." In the new window, go to the file menu and go to "Save as..." Save the bookmarks file on the H Drive (PCs), in macfiles (Macs), or to a floppy disk. When you log in on a different computer and you would like your list of bookmarks simply go back to edit bookmarks (see previous instructions), go to the file menu, and go to "Open Bookmark file." Black Squirrels. There are a lot of black squirrels on campus. Often they are accompanied by squirrels with earrings. Do not approach these creatures. They are dangerous. They were not always black. They were once normal looking squirrels. It is believed that they all belong to a gang with an intelligent "black squirrel with an earring" as their leader. Though no one has seen this leader, it is rumored that he answers by the name 'Vinnie.' Changing Windows. All of the windows that are open can be found at the bottom of the screen, to the right of the start button. You can click on each of these boxes to move to that window. For the window that you are viewing, there are three small buttons in the top righthand corner. The X will close the window, the two boxes will change the window size, and the _ button will minimize the window, placing it on the toolbar next the start button.Changing Passwords. There are actually two passwords that you are using. One of them is your NT password (PC users only). This is the password that you entered when you logged into the machine. The other password is your IMAP password, which is used when you log into your e-mail account (both Mac and PC users). To change your NT password press Control + Alt + Delete. Click on the "Change Password" button in the bottom left hand corner of the window and follow the directions it gives you. To change your IMAP (e-mail) password open Netscape and go to http://www.princeton.edu/imap. Enter your login and password. This should bring you to a window that says "Service Account Management for <your login>." Click on the link in the upper left hand corner that says "Password" and follow the directions for changing your password. Composer. Here are links to some composer tutorials:
