TOPIC: REPRODUCTION

 

*A.  Assessing students prior knowledge, understandings and misconceptions.

{Divide students into groups of four and distribute one flower each from each variety}

  1. Define what is a flower.
  2. Make a drawing of the flowers at your desk.
  3. Identify the parts of the flower.
  4. How is the flower involved in reproduction?
  5. What are the processes involved in reproduction?

*B.  Motivation/Context:

  1. Why is reproduction important in plant species?
  2. Where are the male and female parts of the flower located?
  3. Since plants cannot move how does the male pollen get to where the female pollen is?

*C.   Introduction of Understanding.

  1. Using a diagram, show the steps from a flower to a fruit with seeds.
  2. What occurs to allow the flower to become a fruit?
  3. Why don’t some flowers become fruits or produce seeds but just die off?
  4. Can you describe some methods of seed dispersal?

*D.  Development of Understanding.{distribute a magnifying glass to each group and let students take a closer look at the male and female flower parts, the pollen grain, and the pollen tube.

  1.  Students will check to see where in the flower the seeds will form.
  2.  What occurs during pollination?
  3.  What is the next step after pollination?
  4.  Where would fertilization take place?

  1.  Describe the role of insects visiting flowers.
  2.  Why do flowers have bright colors and different fragrances?
  3.  Is there anything that we can add to the soil to help the flowers in a garden or a pot produce more and bigger flowers?
