"GETTING TO KNOW THE TREES IN OUR SCHOOL NEIGHBORHOOD"

Motivation: How many trees are on the block in front of our school?

Draw one of the trees from memory.

Field trip: Adelphi street, between DeKalb/Lafayette (In front of school)

Assignment: In groups of 3-4 students, record your observations

                   on  the number of  trees, distinguishing characters, other

                    greenery/living things.

Time alloted: 10-20 minutes ,then return to classroom to discuss findings.

Suggested questions:

• How many trees were there?
• Were all the trees of the same variety?
• How many were flowering? How many were not?
• Why do you think this particular specie of tree was selected for this block?
• What type of leaves were there?
• Was there evidence of other living things present?
• Which tree will you adopt?
• List 3 things that you will do to care for your newly adopted tree?
• What will you name your tree?
• Please monitor your tree weekly (written notes/drawing)
