# 2 Context:
Woodland Middle School, East Meadow, L.I.,
New York is a relatively middle class neighborhood with the following demographics: Irish 30%, Italian 30%, Jewish
30%, and a 10% minority of Polish, Russian, Slovak, Sikh,
Black, and Hispanics.
The community is mid-island about ½ the way between
Long Island Sound (N) and the Atlantic Ocean (S). It has
easy access to highways, shopping malls, and sports
arenas. Buses are available for student trips.
# 4 Classroom Environment:
Science is taught for a single period of 39 minutes per day. The Honors track has a double period every
day or every other day with lunch included as work is
done.
It is an old room with long tables that are turned around for lab activities. Equipment is generally available although
all materials are shared and the teacher has to "hunt" in closets for materials as they are not stored in a precise way because of all the "construction" that goes on as we teach.
One computer is in each room with a printer DOWN THE HALL for 4 classrooms to use. No CDs can be used because the system network does not allow it. There is a Bess block on web sites.
