With funding from the Foundation for
Microbiology and the Josephine Bay Paul and C. Michael
Paul Foundation, participants will work with
American Museum of Natural History and Pace University researchers
and educators, engaging in inquiry and developing active-learning
opportunities for students. This institute will be aligned with
New York state standards and National Science Education Standards.
Participants may earn two graduate credits at reduced tuition
rates and up to $600 upon successful completion of the institute.
Who should apply: The
institute is open to New York City Public School biology teachers
grades 5-12. Applicants must be assured of a science teaching
position in 2000-2001. Past participants of Woodrow Wilson
Institutes are not eligible.

Selection: Demonstrated
commitment to student learning, the desire to improve one’s
teaching, the ability to work with diverse groups (both other
teachers and students), and leadership potential are criteria
for selection. In addition, the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship
Foundation is committed to selecting a diverse group of participants
that reflect urban teaching: ethnicity, type of school, and
student population served. There are 20 slots available. Applicants
are accepted on a rolling basis beginning on December 15, 1999
until June 12, 2000.
