C.P. Chemistry  - Single Replacement Reaction Lab Activity

Goals:

Use the internet to find a site containing a simple lab  activity to support in class theory relating to reaction types.
Perform the laboratory activity in class.
Visit an internet site in order to review the theory behind single replacement reactions.
Print a copy of the activity series to be used as a reference material for chemical reaction product prediction.
Practice predicting the products of a single replacement reaction by using an online homework site.

What to do:

1.  Click on this link, LAB  , in order to find the procedure for the laboratory activity to be performed.
2.  Carry out the lab procedure.
3.  Review the theory behind single replacement reactions by clicking here, THEORY, so that you will then be able to predict the products of such a reaction.
4.  Take a look at the ACTIVITY SERIES for some metals.  While here, print yourself a copy of the activity series so that you can use it as a reference later.
5.  Correctly PREDICT the products of six single replacement reactions by visiting an online elecronic homework site.

Key Question:

Why do you think that the copper from the penny did not dissolve in the acid?

Beyond the Lab:

  1. Zinc and Copper are both necessary nutrients in humans.  To find out why and how much zinc and copper are in your body click on the links below:
