Figure 4: The picture below shows a great northern bean seedling at about 98 hsi (hours since imbition).  The parts of the seedling are labelled. Notice that in this seedling the cotyledons will emerge from the soil, drawn by the epicotyl hook.  Each individual part may be used to investigate the relative respiration rates of the organism.

      Figure 5:  The corn seedling below represents a typical monocot seedling. This corn seedling is about 112 hsi (hours since imbition)  Notice that corn kernel will remain below the level of the soil as the coleoptile pierces the soil surface.  The proximal and distal radicals can easily be distinguished by the presence of secondary root growth on the proximal radicle.
