The genes and their locations on each chromosome are made up! This is a simulation. Most of the traits in this activity were created to illustrate how human heredity works in a simplified model and to reinforce basic genetics' principles. Many of the gene locations are not known at this time. Many of the gene locations are in dispute. In reality, inherited characteristics of the face are more complicated than this simple activity illustrates. Most of these facial characteristics are determined by many genes working together in ways geneticists do not yet understand.

The goal of the authors, however, is to have this simulation become more and more "real"! If you have any personal knowledge regarding these gene sites that was not available to the authors at the time of this project, please share your information. Tom and Joyce will modify the genes and chromosomes to reflect the actual data.

As the actual location of these genes are determined, this web site will be modified to reflect those changes.

If you wish to see what the real genes on each of these chromosomes are, and you are hooked up to the Internet, then simply press each of the the chromosomes in the "Classroom Booklet" section, and the www will take you to a place where a detailed, up-to-the-minute account is kept of the gene content of that particular chromosome! Here are two excellent sites that we strongly suggest you and your students visit.

Gateway to Genome Data Base

Gateway to Mendelian Data Base-Latest Data on Actual Gene Locations!

Have your students use this site to improve the simulation!
