Supplemental Activities: Gametogenesis and Fertilization



Activity 1: Models of Gametogenesis

Instructor's Objectives:

To broaden the students' understanding of the concepts of gametogenesis in both plants and >animals.

Teacher Instructions:

1. Give individual students or pairs of students materials for making models.
2. Assign one stage of gametogenesis to each student or pair of students. (Pictures from texts provide a guide for students.)

Materials Needed:

A variety of materials can be used to make models of the stages of gametogenesis. They include: construction paper, bulletin board paper, yarn, and pipe cleaners. The students will also need glue, staples, tape, and scissors.

Good models of gametogenesis can also be created from clay.



Activity 2: Frog Embryology

Instructor's Objectives:

To provide the students with the opportunity to observe fertilization of frog eggs and their development into tadpoles.

Materials Needed:

Carolina Biological Supply kit K3-L1493W Preinjected Frog Set. The kit contains one injected female and two males.
