I am Middle School Science teacher who is teaching
as a second career. At the age of 37, I unexpectedly became a mother
after being told as a teen that I would probably never have children.
This changed my perspective on the universe, as that sort of thing is likely
to do. I felt that it was important to show my daughter how important
having an education was, so at 40 I began attending college to become an
Elementary teacher. After taking my first science course (a course in
Physical Science) I realized that I was in love with science and wanted to
teach science. I changed my major to Science Education, with a focus in
Biology, and here I am today teaching Middle School Science. I love
teaching this age group, because the are still young enough to interest and
inspire. Over the years I have worked with you people in a variety of
ways, including counseling runaways, working with victims of sexual assault,
being a Girl Scout leader etc.
My ethnic background is Native American and Irish, and having been raised by a Native mother, I am culturally Native American and very active in that community. Our people believe that you are what your mother is (we are matrilineal) and our culture is very oriented to our children and nature. I am fairly physically active enjoying the woods, water and desert. I have lived in many parts of the country and enjoy traveling whenever and wherever possible. I do a lot of traditional and not-so-traditional crafts. I have also hosted many international exchange students over the years, as I am intrigued by the great variety of cultures that exist in our world. I am really excited to be a part of this program this summer and looking forward to meeting and networking with so many wonderful teachers from all over the country. |
